Volunteering

Volunteering for Day of Caring at One Umbrella

One of the most effective and rewarding ways that we can contribute to our local communities is through our employees.

Our employees are involved in a wide range of causes either directly or through fundraising initiatives such as the Bass Strait Charity Fund and the Around the Bay in a Day bike ride in Victoria.

ExxonMobil has also taken a proactive approach to encourage and support employee participation in the community through our Volunteer Involvement Program, Day of Caring (an employee volunteering event) and Workplace Giving Program.

In 2008 nearly 400 ExxonMobil employees in Australia provided over 10,000 volunteer hours to the community.

Volunteer Involvement Program
ExxonMobil's Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP) supports the volunteer work of employees who give their personal time to community organisations. ExxonMobil offers employees who are involved as volunteers the opportunity to apply for $1,000 grants to assist their volunteer work.

Schools, environment groups, fire brigades, surf life saving clubs, welfare and cultural groups have all benefited from ExxonMobil donations and the volunteer work of employees. In 2010, 135 community groups received a VIP Award in recognition of the volunteering efforts of our employees.

Day of Caring
Working in association with United Way, the ExxonMobil Day of Caring brings employees from all parts of our operations together for a day's volunteering work at selected community facilities such as community centres and aged care hostels. ExxonMobil teams help to clean, paint, garden, catalogue and cook for those in need.

Some of the organisations that have benefited from the Day of Caring include: Alkira Centre, People and Parks Foundation, Cancer Council Victoria, The Smith Family and Taralye.  In 2009, 24 organisations participated in the program.

Around 260 employees participate in the Day of Caring. The benefits and the difference that volunteers can make in our community are significant. As well as employees learning new skills, this project raises the profile of the volunteer role.

United Way, which helps to select the Day of Caring projects, is a global network of 4000 member organisations operating in 47 countries.  In Australia, United Way has been operating for more than 50 years and it currently invests over $7 million in community development grants throughout the country and provides support for corporate community development programs.
