Offshore Esso Australia staff achieve safety milestone

Local Esso Australia Pty Ltd employees and contractors last week celebrated a record offshore safety milestone.

On Friday 30 May, staff working across Esso’s offshore operations in Bass Strait achieved a year with no recordable injuries. In that time, the workforce safely produced more than 200 billion cubic feet of gas, 15 million barrels of oil and 14 million barrels of natural gas liquids such as LPG.

Achieving this involved:

  • Moving more than 20,000 passengers to and from offshore platforms on 4,000 helicopter flights
  • Performing eight well workovers which involved moving 2,250 tonnes of rig equipment between platforms
  • Cooking and serving 300,000 meals to offshore workers
  • Delivering 74,000 tonnes of supplies and equipment to the platforms

Staff on the offshore platforms used existing tools and programs to drive continuous improvement in safety, including programs such as Loss Prevention System and S.A.F.E. – Speak up, Act mindfully, Follow the rules and get Engaged – which used quarterly focus themes to increase everyone’s engagement in safety.

ExxonMobil Australia Chairman Richard Owen said this achievement comes as the result of extensive efforts by all staff and contractors working together to prioritise safety across all ExxonMobil sites.

“Continuously improving safety performance is a core value for our company and safety is at the centre of everything we do.

“This achievement reflects our one-team approach – working together with attention to our own safety as well as the safety of those around us.

“In our organisation, we will never be satisfied unless we maintain a workplace where ‘nobody gets hurt’,” he said.

Earlier this year, Esso Australia also won the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) Safety Excellence Award. This award recognised that in 2013, Esso Australia achieved the best safety performance in the Australian oil and gas industry.
