Support for Landcare Australia brings benefits to Gippsland

The Gippsland Basin Joint Venture (GBJV) has partnered with Landcare Australia in support of a conservation project in the Mount Worth State Park.

The project consists of two initiatives. Firstly, as part of the Yarragon Primary School science curriculum, children in grades three and four recently visited Mount Worth State Park to undertake a study on natural recycling as part of forest ecology. They completed a nature walk, took soil samples and discussed factors that cause soil erosion, and looked at how leaf litter on the forest floor helps retain moisture in the soil. The pupils will spend another day at Mount Worth in October to study forest plants.

The second initiative involves track restoration works on the scenic Giants Circuit walking track which traverses the national park. As the first stage of restoring the Giants Circuit walking track, a bridge over Lorkin Creek is being repaired. Throughout May and June, VCAL students from Marist-Sion College, Warragul, replaced the existing wooden decking-boards on new concrete bearers.

Members of Mount Worth and District Landcare and Friends of Mount Worth will now install edging boards along sections of the Giants Circuit and crushed rock will be laid to restore the track surface. This work is expected to be completed in October. These works are part of the fourth year of a five year management plan.

Longford Liquids Pipeline Project Manager David Ffrench said support for community initiatives such as this ensure the GBJV continues to be an active and engaged member of the Gippsland community.

“We are committed to conducting our business in a manner that protects and maintains the local environment. Community partnerships such as this one with Landcare Australia are an important part of this commitment,” he said.
