Valuable lessons in wetland care

Students and community organisation members across Gippsland have been experiencing the wonderful world of wetlands with the Victorian Wetland Care Education Program.

Over the past two years, ExxonMobil Australia has been working with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) to develop and deliver school and community programs that help support the natural habitats of local animals and plants in local wetland areas.

The interactive sessions include lessons on identifying native plants, the impact that littering can have on native animals and their habitats and native bird ‘treasure hunts’ that help children learn about the birds that can be spotted in their local wetland.

So far in 2018, the program has been presented to students and community members at Sale Primary School, Araluen Primary School, the Maffra Girl Guides and Maffra Hospital in the Gippsland area.

Longford Plants Manager David Anderson said the program is a wonderful way for students and local residents to make a positive difference to the Gippsland wetlands.

“The Sale Common Nature Reserve has been a focus of the program in 2018. Our wetland areas in Gippsland are a beautiful part of our local area and we are proud to support a program that educates and empowers people to care for these important ecosystems,” said David.
