“When David spoke at our Men’s Shed Muster in May he expressed an interest in touring the refinery,” said the Refinery Safety, Security, Health and Environment Manager David Schuller. “And he very kindly offered to talk to our team about men’s health.”
As a result, the super coach and passionate health educator was booked in as guest speaker at the refinery’s Soup & Speaker safety event on 25 July 2017.
As a cancer survivor himself, he urged to workers, particularly the men, to take control of their own health.
“Women tend to talk about health issues but men don’t,” he said.
David stressed the importance of knowing our parents’ health histories so that we know which areas we should be focusing on.
“If you do nothing else, go and have a yearly check-up with your doctor,” he said.
He also delivered messages on the importance of good teamwork.
“If you are a good team player, you are trusted and predictable,” he said.
“You do what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, and you do it all the time.”
The Altona Refinery Manager Riccardo Cavallo said that the Soup & Speaker imitative was part of the refinery’s efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of the workforce.
“Of the 350 people working at the refinery, most are men, so it was great having David here to deliver his health messages,” he said.
“And, I’m sure our women workers will take the messages home to the men and boys in their lives.
“Anything we can do to improve our health, both at work and at home, delivers immeasurable benefits for our whole community.”
