Local students develop a vision for Altona Refinery’s appearance

Mobil is giving eight students from Williamstown High School Pasco Campus and Bayside P-12 College Paisley Campus the opportunity to trade a week of school for a week of meaningful work experience at Altona Refinery.

The selected Year 10 students will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to work at an oil refinery from 20 to 25 October 2014, through the Students@Work program.

The Students@Work program was developed by Akorn Educational Services and is run by Transfield Services in conjunction with Mobil, and the two local secondary schools.

Mobil Altona Refinery Manager, Andrew Warrell said, “This is the fifth Students@Work program run at the Altona Refinery, following the success of the program in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

“Everyone at the refinery involved in this program is very excited at the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience, so that the students get some real value from their time here,” said Andrew.

This year, the students will need to work as a team to develop a detailed plan to help the refinery improve its external appearance using landscaping and other ideas, learning about the refinery and associated career opportunities along the way.

“This year’s project to find practical and efficient ways to improve the refinery’s appearance compliments our current investment in upgrading the refinery’s buildings to provide a safer and more pleasant work environment for our employees,” said Andrew.

“It is great to have these young minds coming up with innovative ideas which we can then look at developing further.”

Transfield Services CME Alliance Acting Manager, Brent Jefferis said, “The Students@Work program provides a fantastic opportunity for local students to experience many occupational skills that they are not exposed to in the school setting, including working closely in a team with people you may not know, problem solving and working within limits, regulations and budgets dictated by others.”
