Joan’s Garden has been created as a vibrant space that can be utilised by community members accessing the Williamstown Community and Education Centre, including participants in its childcare and adult education programs.
Officially opened on 1 June 2016, the first anniversary of Joan Kirner’s death, the garden pays homage to the local politician, famous for being Victoria’s first and only female premier, and well-loved by the people in her home town of Williamstown.
Altona Refinery has a long-standing relationship with Williamstown Community and Education Centre, which has continued to grow over nearly twenty years. During that time, we have supported the centre in many ways including:
-Financial support – we have provided contributions to support the purchase of various equipment and new technology for the centre
-In-kind support – we have donated spare computers and other items to the centre as well as participating in many “Day of Caring” events, where our employees volunteer at the centre.
Importantly, members of the centre’s management committee are directly engaged with the refinery by regularly attending our quarterly community meetings.
Altona Refinery Safety, Security, Health and Environment Manager, David Schuller said, “Williamstown Community and Education Centre provides us with an important and valuable link to the Williamstown community and we look forward to continuing to foster our relationship into the future.”
