Time, friendship and support for youth in Sale
As part of the ‘Your Past, Their Future, Mentoring Program’, Esso’s volunteer mentors participated in a mentor training day conducted by School Focused Youth Services before being matched with a student each to meet with for one hour each week during school hours. This one-on-one time is intended to build the relationship between mentor and mentee and engender an environment of trust.
During this time the mentor provides a non-judgmental friendship with the student by partaking in simple, constructive activities such as going for a walk, having a chat over a hot drink, baking, playing a board game or engaging in arts and crafts. Students have been selected from local primary schools in the Gippsland region.
Esso Australia Community Relations Adviser Angela Jones said mentoring local students is one of the most rewarding and important activities she has undertaken in the local community.
“Something as simple as an hour of board games and chit-chat can make a real difference to the way a child perceives the world and their future.
“In the long-term, this can have positive effects such as decreased risks of alcohol and drug abuse, increased school attendance and improved confidence, resilience and self-esteem. Speaking to some of the other Esso mentors, they also are feeling an immense sense of satisfaction and well-being from their participation,” said Angela.
Program Coordinator Melesa Eldred said that more mentors are required to start working with young people early next year.
“We need people of all backgrounds, ages and experiences. We are looking for people who are reliable, non-judgemental and have a passion for young people.”
Full training and support will be provided. For further information please contact Melesa via email: eldred.melesa.m@edumail.vic.gov.au or phone: +65 0400 197 705.
