Children discover the chirpy world of penguins
Developed by Phillip Island Nature Parks and sponsored by ExxonMobil Australia, the Chirpy Chicks program comes to life through school incursions from park rangers who give children an interactive crash-course on the interesting, yet fragile, lives of penguins.
During a Chirpy Chicks session, children immerse themselves in penguin life through life-like penguin dress-ups, mock-examinations and storytelling. Children also learn about how they can protect the penguin species against the many threats facing its population.
This year, the Chirpy Chicks program has visited 14 schools with two more scheduled before the end of the second school term. This includes Spotswood Primary School which is close to our Altona Refinery.
ExxonMobil Australia Community Relations Manager Melanie Saliba said that the business is proud to support the Chirpy Chicks program, which gives local children a real appreciation of our marine ecosystem.
“Children have always loved penguins because they are cute, but after a Chirpy Chicks incursion they are able to gain a deeper understanding of their existence and the responsibility that we all have to protect their environment.
“We look forward to continuing our support for Phillip Island Nature Parks so they can roll-out these programs to more schools in the future,” she said.
