We are also an active contributor to a range of organisations that conduct important environmental research, conservation and education programs.

Marine wildlife of WA

As part of an ongoing commitment to marine conservation, ExxonMobil has partnered with the Department of Parks and Wildlife to assist with the production of a marine parks activity book for primary school children. The activity book contains a range of fun activities for kids and will also help to promote Western Australia’s unique marine parks. More than 30,000 copies of the activity book are being distributed to schools around WA. For further information visit the Department of Parks and Wildlife website.

ExxonMobil has supported the production of two guides to assist in identifying marine wildlife in northwest and southern Western Australia. The guides will increase knowledge about the distribution of threatened and other little known marine animals like the rare Australian sea lion and the spotted dolphin and help to improve their management and protection. The guides also provide useful tips on conserving marine life and keeping coastal islands pest free.

Conservation Volunteers Australia

Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) is recognised as Australasia’s leading practical, community based conservation organisation. Since 1992, ExxonMobil has supported a range of CVA conservation projects. ExxonMobil is a proud supporter of the Conservation Volunteers Victorian Wetlands Program. Our support enables Conservation Volunteers to undertake cconservation activities within wetlands in Gippsland, Altona & Hastings regions including community and employee volunteering events and a schools outreach program.

Western Port Seagrass Partnership

Western Port Bay has experienced significant declines in seagrasses due to water turbidity from catchment run off and erosion. Western Port Seagrass Partnership was established in 2000 to develop a network of organisations to address issues associated with the decline of seagrasses. Seagrasses are an important contributor to the nutrient and food cycle of the Bay and play an important role in maintaining the stability of mud banks and water quality. Seagrasses are also important in the marine ecosystem (provide shelter and food for marine species) and contribute to the quality of the wetlands that has made Western Port Bay famous for its migratory birds and lead to its listing as a RAMSAR site.

ExxonMobil Australia has been a supporter of Western Port Seagrass Partnership research projects and is the major sponsor of a DVD – Western Port Cherished and Challenged. The 40 minute DVD covers the history of Western Port, showcases beautiful underwater and landscape photography and highlights the decline of seagrasses. The DVD is available free of charge from the Western Port Seagrass Partnership website.

Esso and BHP Billiton have also provided a joint venture contribution towards the purchase of special 'mudders' footwear to assist Western Port Seagrass Partnership with a mangrove planting program.

Tracking seals in southern waters

ExxonMobil's commitment includes support for the latest in satellite-tracking technology to assist in a long-term study of seals that gather on our Bass Strait platforms. The seal research, which is conducted by Phillip Island Nature Parks (PINP), has provided valuable data on the foraging and diving habits of Australian Fur Seals. PINP has used the research to develop a DVD to help provide secondary school teachers with classroom activities and information about seals. The most recent education resources include a seal early reader and teaching guide for kindergarten and primary school teachers.

Tighes Hill remediation

The Tighes Hill Terminal began operating as a petroleum storage and distribution facility in 1936 following the land reclamation from inter-tidal mangrove flat. The Depot commenced operation as a truck depot in the late 1980s. Mobil became the owner of both properties in 1991 as part of the national acquisition of facilities from Esso.

Adelaide Refinery

The former Adelaide Refinery at Port Stanvac, located south of Adelaide near Lonsdale, was demolished in early 2014 and a project is underway to remediate the site to a standard suitable for future industrial use.
