Valuable lessons in wetland care

Students from Newport Lakes Primary School have experienced the wonderful world of wetlands with the Victorian Wetland Care Education Program.

Over the past two years, ExxonMobil Australia been working with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) to develop and deliver school and community programs that help support the natural habitats of local animals and plants in local wetland areas.

The interactive sessions include lessons on identifying native plants, the impact that littering can have on native animals and their habitats and native bird ‘treasure hunts’ that help children learn about the birds that can be spotted in their local wetland.

CVA volunteers have also led four community volunteer wetland days in Williamstown’s Stony Creek Backwash and Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve close to our Altona and Yarraville operations.

Altona Refinery Manager Riccardo Cavallo said the program is a wonderful way for students and local residents to make a positive difference to the local wetlands.

“The wetland areas in the western suburbs are a beautiful part of our local area and we are proud to support a program that educates and empowers people to care for these important ecosystems,” he said.
