The Altona refinery has been an icon of the local community and Melbourne’s west for more than 70 years. Mobil is set to maintain its significant presence in Altona, and contribution to Australia’s fuel security, with the conversion of the refinery site to Victoria’s largest fuel import terminal.
“Over Altona refinery’s 70 years of operation, we have built and valued many strong relationships with our neighbours and fellow community members,” said Altona refinery manager, Riccardo Cavallo.
“Although we recently made the difficult decision to convert the Mobil Altona refinery to an import terminal and cease refining operations at the site, Mobil, and our commitment to our people, our neighbours and the local environment, is not going anywhere.
“The refinery will remain in operation for some time to ensure we will continue to meet Victoria’s fuel needs while the conversion to an import terminal is completed.
“We will continue to foster our community relationships and remain focused, as always, on meeting the expectations of our employees, neighbours, customers and other business partners while maintaining safe, flawless and efficient operations.”
Conversion to an import terminal is set to take many months and Mobil is simultaneously developing a comprehensive decommissioning and remediation plan for any parts of the site that will not be required as part of the terminal operation.
“While conversion to an import terminal should occur within a relatively short time-frame, perhaps within the next year, decommissioning activities and remediation of the remainder of the site will take careful planning.
“We are committed to carefully planning our decommissioning and remediation activities so that they achieve the best outcome for our neighbours, the Hobsons Bay community and the environment,” said Riccardo.
“Decommissioning and remediation are long-term activities that can take many years to complete. Throughout this process, we will continue to engage with our neighbours through our regular community newsletters and meetings.
“We will also continue to support a significant number of local jobs throughout the conversion, decommissioning and remediation processes, as well as maintain a number of ongoing jobs to support the fuel import terminal operations.”
