Arts focus remains strong after 70 years

While Altona Refinery supports a wide range of community programs in Melbourne’s west, support for the arts has a special place for the team.

This year, the refinery has been proud to support the Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre’s‘Postcards of Altona’ photo competition. The initiative aims to showcase some of the beautiful imagery that exists of the local area and its surrounds, with entrants invited to submit images that showcase Altona’s natural beauty, heritage and culture. The Top 10 voted favourites are to be reproduced as postcards for sale.

Altona Refinery is celebrating 70 years of Altona Refinery operations in 2019 and during that time, the local area has grown along with its local operations. Altona Refinery Manager Riccardo Cavallo said that the refinery itself plays a role in the landscape of the area.

“70 years of operations in Altona represents a great deal of investment across many fields. It means decades of supporting the livelihoods of local residents through creating jobs and the continued support of small businesses in Altona.

“It also means 70 years of assisting local charities as well as community and environmental groups,” he said.

Kim Reilly, Centre Manager, Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre, said the centre has shared a mutually supportive relationship with Mobil since the centre opened in 2005.

“We are community owned, community managed and exist because of and for, our community. Mobil is such part of the Altona landscape and of our community that we feel a connection and bond with them. They have been a generous supporter of many of our community arts programs,” she said.
