Hastings Primary School takes the classroom outdoors

With a focus on science, Hastings Primary School, with support from Esso and BHP Billiton, has taken the traditional classroom outside to develop its students’ understanding of many aspects of the environment.

Following the successful development of a community kitchen garden, Hastings Primary wanted to work with students on outdoor classroom projects such as developing horticultural skills, marketing of produce, environmental awareness programs regarding composting, water wise behaviours and furthering the understanding of environmental sustainability through recycling.

The school has been able to establish a fully portable outdoor classroom with seating, tables and equipment with storage which also includes raised garden beds for horticultural and environment studies. The portable classroom has been a hit with both students and teachers. The SWIVL technology that supports videoing of lessons and presentations for teachers and students works in conjunction with an iPad and has proven to be very useful in helping to hold classes outdoors.

“We want to promote an enriching learning environment for our students and the outdoor classroom helps us to focus on our maths and science curriculum in a fun and engaging way”, said Sue Lyons, Principal of Hastings Primary School.
