Gippsland gas powers Australian building and construction industry

MELBOURNE, Australia – Esso Australia Resources Pty Ltd (‘Esso’, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Australia Pty Ltd) has extended its gas sales agreement with InfraBuild, which will see the company continue supplying Gippsland gas to support Australia’s building and construction industry until at least the mid-2020s.
Esso Australia’s Gippsland gas will support InfraBuild’s sustainable steel manufacturing operations in Victoria and New South Wales.

ExxonMobil Australia Chair, Dylan Pugh, said Esso continues to invest in delivering reliable and affordable Gippsland gas to Australian homes and businesses, supporting local jobs and the Australian economy.

“Our ongoing investment and commitment to supplying Australian customers means that the Gippsland Basin remains the largest single source of gas supply to the east coast domestic market,” said Mr Pugh.

“We continue to develop competitive supply agreements that meet the needs of local manufacturers, contracting over 60 petajoules (PJ) of natural gas directly with industrial customers in the last three years alone.

“As our agreement with Infrabuild demonstrates, our reliable supply of natural gas is powering Australian jobs, providing the energy used by local manufacturers, hospitality venues, medical facilities and construction firms, and supporting the countless people and industries who rely on their products and services,” he said.

InfraBuild CEO and Managing Director Vik Bansal, said that as Australia recovers from the impacts of COVID-19, the construction and manufacturing industries are proving to be a significant source of economic stimulation.

“Across the country, InfraBuild is a key participant and supplier in large scale nation building projects including major infrastructure, wind farms and road works, alongside residential and commercial investments,” Mr Bansal said.

“We are not only revitalising our cities and improving our shared spaces, but also generating jobs and growing our local economy.

“At the heart of it all is InfraBuild’s steel, proudly made in Australia using Gippsland gas.”

InfraBuild is Australia’s leading and only vertically-integrated Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel manufacturing, distribution and recycling business, employing 5000 plus people across the country and in the United States and Europe.

The company supplies over 15,000 customers across Australia, and plays a key role in the delivery of major infrastructure projects including the Westgate and Metro tunnel projects in Melbourne, the Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park in South Australia and the Sydney Metro Martin Place project.
