West Barracouta demonstrates Gippsland Basin potential

The largest single source of gas for south eastern Australia for the last 50 years still has plenty of potential.
Esso Australia remains on-track to deliver West Barracouta gas to the Australian market in time for our peak winter demand period.

"West Barracouta will probably be the largest domestic gas project for eastern Australia that comes along this decade, building on our long and proud history of reliably supplying gas used in Australian homes and businesses for more than 50 years," said ExxonMobil Australia chairman Nathan Fay.

“The Gippsland Basin remains today the largest single source of gas supply to the east coast domestic market. And West Barracouta demonstrates it still has the capacity to bring material new gas supply to the market - there is still plenty of potential left in the Bass Strait.”

By the end of this decade the Gippsland Basin will continue to have the potential to supply one third of south east Australia’s domestic gas demand.

“We have a long history of supplying reliable and affordable energy to Australia and have invested significantly in maintaining this supply of energy that our customers, from heavy industries to families heating up their homes in winter, rely on,” said Nathan.

With the recent completion of the hot tap work crucial to getting West Barracouta gas flowing, the final execution phase of the West Barracouta project is well advanced. The team on the Barracouta A platform are now preparing to commence the project’s commissioning and start-up sequence which will soon see gas flowing.

“Despite all the challenges associated with delivering a major offshore gas development project, especially during COVID19, we remain on-track to deliver gas from West Barracouta, one of the largest undeveloped gas fields off south-eastern Australia, in time for winter this year, when many of our customers need it most.”
