Building a library of STEM resources at St Joseph Primary School
Birkenhead terminal’s Bright Future Grants are supporting STEM learning in local schools.

Over the last few years, St Joseph’s School in Ottoway, South Australia, has built up an impressive library of STEM resources thanks to Bright Future Grants from the nearby Mobil Birkenhead terminal.
Students at the school now have the opportunity to participate in hands-on, interactive STEM learning utilising a range of equipment and resources such as science construction kits, maths equipment, Lego Mindstorm robotic kits and Spheros.
Birkenhead terminal manager, David Barker, and operations manager Xavier Hundertmark, recently visited the school to see the Bee Bot Swarms and Lego STEM sets, purchased with the school’s 2020 Bright Future Grant, in action.
“Our visit to St Joseph’s School to see the junior primary students using the Bee Bots and Lego STEM sets purchased with their 2020 Bright Future Grants was amazing to say the least,” said David.
“It was great to see the teachers had put so much effort into planning classes to most effectively use the STEM resources they have been able to access thanks to our Bright Future Grants. Their appreciation of Mobil’s support was humbling and made me feel very proud that we continue to support schools in this way.
“I was also really pleased to see so many students embracing all the learning opportunities this equipment provides - I certainly don’t recall these sort of dynamic and engaging classes in my time at primary school,” said David.
Since 2009, ExxonMobil Australia, through our subsidiaries, Mobil and Esso, has been working to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists through our Bright Future Grants program.
Each year, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools close to our Altona Refinery, Yarraville Terminal, Birkenhead Terminal, Longford Plants and Long Island Point Plant are invited to apply for a Bright Future Grant to support maths or science resources or projects.
