Energy from Bass Strait

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture (GBJV) in 2019, we’ve been delving into our video archives to look at the way we once were.

News

‘Energy From Bass Strait’ is a documentary outlining the importance of our Gippsland operations right at its beginning.

“Oil has been called the lifeblood of a nation,” begins the narrator, highlighting the crucial impact that GBJV operations had in contributing to the economic growth of Australia.

Over the past half-century, our Gippsland operations have transitioned from a predominantly oil business to today’s focus on providing natural gas to Australia. The GBJV now supplies between 40 and 50 percent of east coast Australian domestic gas demand.

“We are but a handful of people scattered thinly across the largest island continent on earth. For us, movement is critical. Therefore, the energy to move is critically important.”

The message from the film continues to ring true 50 years on.
