Contributing to Gippsland for 50 years

In the years since Esso Australia formed its historic joint venture with BHP, known as the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture (GBJV), it has also developed long-lasting relationships with a wide variety of community organisations.
“While our day-to-day work involves providing the energy vital to sustaining our way of life, we also believe in contributing directly to the quality of life in our community,” said Longford Plants Manager David Anderson.

Esso Australia believes that safety is an area where it has a great deal to contribute to the wider community. Recently, a high capacity firefighting pump, sponsored by the GBJV contributions program, played an important role in controlling a major bushfire that broke out near Rosedale in January.

Sale Fire Brigade Captain Phil Bloink said the Brigade responded to the extensive fires with the Sale Big Fill, which happened to be sponsored by the GBJV as part of a grant application with the brigade and the CFA back in 2014.

“A small investment into the brigade made by Esso/BHP some five years ago is still providing a benefit to the local and wider community. The brigade and the community are forever grateful for the companies’ support,” he said.

In 2019, the GBJV is celebrating 50 years of operations in Gippsland – a significant milestone both locally in Gippsland and more broadly for the impact the GBJV has had in Australia’s economic growth over the past half-century.

“As well as bringing jobs and economic growth to Gippsland, we continue to take seriously our responsibility to be valued members of the community. One of the most effective ways we have found to do this is by supporting local community groups and initiatives, including schools, hospitals and emergency services,” concluded David.
