Offshore and on duty

Esso Australia has deployed a specialised occupational health service for its offshore operations in Bass Strait to enhance its medical support services to remote platform locations.

News

The introduction of the offshore medic program, which commenced in August 2018, involves two dedicated offshore medics working back-to-back on a two week roster. The medic circulates between the offshore platforms and the Longford Plants clinic.

Along with providing round-the-clock medical support, the medics have also been providing health promotion presentations, first aid training assessments, assistance with coordinating offshore emergency drills and conducting health inspections. The medics are also available to assist and support medivacs.

Dr. Marcus Hirschfield, Manager Medicine and Occupational Health, said the benefits of offshore medics being embedded in the offshore location are wide-ranging.

“By living amongst the operations team, the offshore medics are able to build a valuable rapport with workers on the platform while being more accessible for potential medical issues around the clock.

The program is also delivering efficiencies in the provision of medical treatment with medics acting as the first point of triage for patients.

“The system is not just providing more personalised care, but it’s also providing faster care through a seamless flow of information which starts with direct patient contact.

“Most importantly, the medics feel like they are making a difference and have been embraced by the broader offshore team. We feel it has been a real success,” said Dr. Hirschfield.
