Paper gives way to tablets for offshore cranes

One example is the increasing use of electronic tablets in our upstream and downstream operations.
One of the latest operations to switch from paper records to tablets is the platform cranes in Bass Strait.

“This takes on even greater importance when cranes are in operation in the harsh offshore environment. The introduction of tablets on to our platforms by our crane-operating company, Boom Logistics, has delivered a step-up in the safety and efficiency of our crane operations."
In order to facilitate the use of the tablets, using software provided by Perth-based Colleagues Matrixx, Esso digitised its detailed paper-based processes and procedures governing the crane operations.
Boom Logistics Offshore Manager Travis Kelly said that the tablets were significantly more efficient than the paper-based record keeping.
“User-friendly drop-down menus, mandatory fields that must be completed before transmission is allowed, the opportunity to upload photographs all help the crews on the platforms make sure that valuable information and time are not lost,” he said.
IT Adviser Karryn Graham said that we were just beginning to see the full potential of tablets in our operations.
“We are working with the operations teams to improve the benefits of these devices,” she said.
“Once you capture data electronically it opens up a range of opportunities for data analytics that can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our operations."
