Esso Australia honoured with industry safety excellence award

Esso Australia has been commended by the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) for excellence and outstanding leadership in safety practices.
Esso received the Safety Company Excellence Award at the recently announced 2019 APPEA Environment and Safety Excellence Awards, which recognise safety performance and environmental values across the oil and gas industry.

APPEA noted Esso’s “strong commitment to safety culture, leadership, and workforce consultation” that was “underpinned by a back-to-basics approach” to ensure frontline teams are kept safe.

“This industry-wide award reflects a tremendous amount of work and dedication across our business in refocussing on the fundamentals and making a step change improvement in our safety performance,” ExxonMobil Australia Chairman Nathan Fay said.

“Ultimately, in the simplest sense, this is recognition for us working together to collectively keep more of our people safe and reduce the number of doctor's visits, ambulances on site, and impact to people's health.

“While safety is a continuous journey and never an area we can become complacent, this is a great reminder that we should at least take a moment to reflect on a huge positive from 2020 and a job well done.”

Following a major review of safety processes and systems, Esso achieved its best safety performance in five years, with sustained improvement in process safety throughout 2019.

Key to the uplift was initiatives such as Enhancing Process Safety to drive greater workforce process safety literacy and the introduction of a Daily Leader Guide, which outlines a clear process for front line leaders to follow to ensure their teams are working safely.

“APPEA recognised it was innovative to go back to the fundamentals and focus on making sure they were effective,” said Esso Australia Safety and OIMS Supervisor Kent Alexander, who supported these efforts.

“The Daily Leader Guide demonstrated how we had listened to our field leaders and built a process that clearly outlines the key things leaders must do to know our teams are working safely.

“Enhancing Process Safety has improved awareness of process safety, and enhanced our implementation of safeguards that are grounded in our Safety Cases. We have also seen richer learning by reviewing events from both within and outside our industry, highlighted through our Dreamworld case study.”

APPEA Chief Executive Andrew McConville said it was “exciting to see innovative, industry-leading companies adopting new management approaches and technologies for challenges the industry faces”.

“Australia’s oil and gas industry is committed to continuous improvement and the Awards provide an opportunity to recognise outstanding achievements in safety and environmental performance for individual projects and companies across our broad membership base,” Mr McConville said.
