Longford team responds to COVID19 to maintain crucial gas supplies

As we all negotiate our way through this COVID-19 pandemic, it is critically important that we maintain essential energy supplies to the community.

At Longford, an Incident Management Team is monitoring the issue and implementing actions and changing work practices to keep our people safe, so we can continue to deliver the essential energy Australia needs.

“Our Gippsland operations are currently supplying around 90% of Victoria’s gas demand, 50% of NSW gas demand and 100% of Tasmania’s gas,” said Longford Plant Manager Kartik Garg.

“We have a critical role in Australia’s energy supply chain. So many people and businesses, along with essential services like hospitals and emergency responders, rely on the energy we supply.

“It is vitally important that we keep our people safe and maintain our operations throughout this very challenging time.”

Like all ExxonMobil sites, Longford has been limiting visitor access and is screening all entrants with questionnaires and temperature checks.

“In addition to a range of measures to facilitate social distancing, we have also modified catering arrangements at the Longford canteen to only include food delivery and takeaway options, following the Australian government’s recent guidance concerning non-essential gatherings.

“We have introduced additional cleaning, including regular disinfection of surfaces in common areas, and have made flu kits available to everyone on site.”

Kartik said he was really proud of the way the entire Longford team had responded to this challenge.

“I am really proud to be part of the Longford and wider Esso Australia family.  Our team has been working collaboratively to establish work arrangements to ensure continuity of gas supply, in a scenario where the number of COVID-19 cases increases in the Gippsland region.

“I want to thank everyone at the plant for maintaining a sense of calm through these uncertain times, looking after themselves, their family and their teammates and all pulling together to maintain our vital energy supplies to Australian homes and businesses,” he said.
