Australian Geoscience team contribute to PNG LNG

As well as supporting our essential supply of energy products to Australia, ExxonMobil Australia’s local operations serve as a hub which supports other ExxonMobil projects and operations across the Asia-Pacific region. For example, members of the local Geoscience team based here in Melbourne, headed up by PNG Development Geoscience Supervisor Glyn Jones, support many different aspects of our operations in Papua New Guinea.

“PNG LNG is a significant resource development project, driving economic growth in Papua New Guinea and producing lasting benefits throughout the country,” said Glyn, whose career at ExxonMobil spans nearly 15 years.

“Our team is responsible for providing all geoscience support to the PNG LNG gas and oil fields; P’nyang, the Elk and Antelope fields underpinning Papua LNG as well as the recent Muruk discovery.

We work closely with Reservoir Engineering to monitor the status of our producing fields as well as assessing fields being considered for future development. We also work closely with our Commercial teams on opportunities and negotiations involving the subsurface.

“To do this, we use a lot of different data, and technology, including geologic mapping, Strontium isotope dating, seismic and structural interpretation and wellbore logging,” he continued.

“The geology of PNG is some of the most complex that we see across our operations globally and our team has done an outstanding job to develop detailed 3D models which forecast what the subsurface may look like and subsequently help support business decisions on commercial negotiations, new developments and drill wells or workover opportunities on existing wells. 

“The next few years year will see our team tackle an array of exciting opportunities, one of which is the development drilling of the Angore field.”
