Over four decades of serving with pride

Ever since we went exploring in Bass Strait over half a century ago, Esso Australia has been striving to have a lasting, positive effect on the local community.

We are proud of our contribution to Gippsland and this comes in many forms, be it by providing direct and indirect economic benefits through revenue to the governments, new jobs that help develop a technically skilled workforce, and purchasing local goods and services in order to create investment opportunities.

As we make these significant investments into the economy, we believe it is also important to contribute to the social and cultural fabric of the communities in which we live and work.

This has involved building strong and lasting relationships with many community organisations – schools, hospitals, emergency services and environmental groups – through our Contributions Program.

One of Esso Australia’s longest relationships is our association with The Lions Club of Sale. Alongside our Gippsland Basin Joint Venture partner BHP, we have proudly supported the Lions Club in its annual Christmas hamper project since its inception in 1974.

Each year, the Lions Club of Sale, in conjunction with the Lions clubs of Longford, Maffra, Heyfield, Macalister Valley-Newry, Briagolong, Stratford, Rosedale, Loch Sport and Wellington/Latrobe deliver Christmas cheer to families in need. This important project has seen over 9000 hampers and supermarket vouchers distributed in our community.

On 19 October 2017, Esso Australia was thrilled to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship on behalf of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture from the Lions Clubs of Sale.

“The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest recognition that Lions can give,” said the Lions Club’s Bill Lack. “Awarding the fellowship to a corporate partner such as Esso is not a common practice. It’s only done when a corporate has exhibited long and sustained humanitarian support. Such is the case with Esso for its support of the Christmas Hamper project over 43 years.”

ExxonMobil Australia Chairman Richard Owen said the hampers were just one fine example of the vital assistance the Lions provide throughout the country.

“We are very proud of our long-standing relationship with the Lions Club,” Mr Owen said. “The Lions represent true excellence in social service, so to receive this top award from such an esteemed organisation is a truly great honour.”
