Maintaining our reliable supply of high quality fuels from Altona

Once the Altona refinery is converted to an import terminal, the site is set to be one of Australia’s key fuel storage and logistics facilities.

Currently the refinery imports around 80 per cent of the crude oil it processes via tanker at Gellibrand wharf. The crude oil is transported to Altona refinery from Gellibrand wharf via pipeline. Once processed by the refinery, most of the refined fuel is transported to our fuel terminal in Yarraville, where it is supplied to our customers for distribution by road.

“As we cease importing and processing crude oil and instead move to importing, storing and distributing refined fuel products, Mobil will proudly maintain our role as a key supplier of fuel to Victoria,” said Australia and New Zealand Fuels Manager, Christine Baker.

Mobil will import refined fuel, rather than crude oil via Gellibrand wharf, and transport the fuel to the Altona site via the existing pipeline. The fuel will be stored at the Altona site until it is transported via existing pipelines to Yarraville terminal and Melbourne airport, to supply our customers in Victoria.

“This is similar to the fuel import process we have put in place during past interruptions to Altona refinery’s operations,” said Christine.

“Previously, when the refinery has been shut down for extended periods, such as during major maintenance events, we have successfully imported fuels to maintain our supply to customers, including jet fuel for Melbourne airport and diesel for commercial and agricultural customers, as well as the petrol so many Victorians rely on.

As a fuel terminal, the Altona site will continue to have an important role in supplying the fuel Victorians need, and maintain our contribution to Australia’s robust fuel security.

“The conversion of Altona refinery will mean Mobil customers can feel safe knowing they will continue to receive the same supply of quality Mobil fuels they currently rely on,” said Christine.
