Sharyn carves exquisite anniversary gift for Mobil Oil New Zealand

Product Quality Adviser Sharyn King has an intense and busy job, ensuring Mobil fuel provided to New Zealand customers meets Mobil’s strict quality standards.
Starting out as a Lab Technician at Seaview terminal in December 1985, Sharyn has dedicated the last 35 years of her life to supporting Mobil’s supply of quality fuel to our customers.
During the last five of those years, inspired by Mobil’s 120th Anniversary celebrations, Sharyn has spent some of her spare time carving a very special gift out of Oamaru limestone to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Mobil’s operation in Aotearoa.
Sharyn discovered a love of carving when a colleague suggested she stop responding to emails, and turn off her phone while on annual leave and find something else to do.
“I went out to my shed, found a piece of limestone that my aunt had left behind with some basic tools and started working on it,” said Sharyn.
“It was a simple piece which I called The Initiator and later gifted to Paul Kruger in appreciation of him telling me to take a break.”
After that, Sharyn worked on several smaller pieces, until she attended a weekend workshop.
“At the workshop, I had to provide a concept drawing and the Mobil carving, called Start of Working, my first big work, was born.
“I am so pleased to have finally completed the work and dedicate it to 125 years of Mobil in New Zealand. My gift is a recognition of the significant role the company has played in my life, and of the contributions every person who has worked for the company over 125 years has made to New Zealand.”
Mobil Oil New Zealand Chair, Andrew McNaught, accepted the gift from Sharyn on behalf of the company during a meeting at Seaview terminal.
“Longevity comes from operational excellence, competitiveness and of course, the quality of our people,” said Andrew.
“Every person who has ever worked for Mobil should be proud of their contribution to Aotearoa’s technological evolution, social development and economic advancement.
“That working for Mobil could inspire such a wonderful and heartfelt gift from a long-serving employee is a testament to the manawanui (persistence and dedication) and the ngākaupono (loyalty), of our team.
“I thank Sharyn immensely for this exquisite gift, it is a taonga, a treasured possession, for all of us who work at Mobil, all who have worked for Mobil in the past, and those who will work for Mobil in the future.”
