ExxonMobil artworks find new home at the NGV

As part of ExxonMobil’s relocation of its Southbank offices to the Docklands, the move team were charged with finding worthy homes for a range of items that couldn’t be accommodated in the new headquarters.

While a number of items were given to charity, such as kitchen supplies given to St Vincent de Paul Society and gym equipment donated to Altona P-9 College; two valuable Australian artworks found a high-profile home at one of Australia’s leading galleries.

The pieces in question were Summer Light by Hans Heysen and MacDonnell Ranges at Heavitree Gap, by Albert Namatjira, which were both donated and accepted into the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Collection

The NGV Collection is a highly significant cultural and educational resource that enriches the minds and lives of the Australian public.

Dr Isobel Crombie Assistant Director, Curatorial and Collection Management at the National Gallery of Victoria thanked ExxonMobil for gifting the two pieces of art which are “wonderful additions to the Prints & Drawings and Indigenous Art departments.”

As a result of the donation, Esso Australia was welcomed as a Member of the NGV Foundation which honours acts of benefaction.

ExxonMobil Australia Chairman Richard Owen said the organisation is pleased to have supported one of Australia’s most iconic art institutions.

“While it was sad to say goodbye to these beautiful pieces of art, we are extremely gratified that they can now be enjoyed by generations of Australians at one of the world’s great art galleries. In addition, this support for the arts builds on the Esso Australia Collection of Australian Art donated earlier this year to the Gippsland Art Gallery.

“I look forward to paying the NGV a visit in the near future to reacquaint myself with these two brilliant artworks which once graced the walls of our Southbank offices,” said Richard.
